TURNING PAIN INTO PURPOSE, LOSS INTO LAW

Find out more

In January of 2024, I lost my son, Cody Sorenson. He was only 24 years old — a hardworking young man with a big heart, a love for the outdoors, and dreams that were bigger than Montana’s skies.

My family and I allege that Cody died after being denied essential services — water, heat, and electricity — by his landlord during one of the coldest winters we’ve ever had. A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed, but I’m left wondering:

How can something like this happen in Montana and go unnoticed?

How can unlawful acts against someone so vulnerable slip through every safety net we’re supposed to have? Since that day, I’ve been doing everything I can to make sure Cody’s death isn’t just another tragedy forgotten. I started the Justice for Cody Initiative because I needed to give my son a voice — and because I believe real change can come from truth, compassion, and accountability.

I’m working on what will soon become Cody’s Law – The Landlord Certification and Tenant Protection Act. It’s not official yet — I’m still finalizing the language and working to make sure it’s strong, fair, and written the right way. But my goal is simple, to make sure no one in Montana ever dies again because they were denied the basic things every human being deserves — water, heat, and safety in their own home.

I’m not a politician. I’m a mom who lost her son, and I’m trying to make sure it never happens to someone else. Cody can’t speak for himself anymore — but I can. I am his voice, and I will keep speaking until something changes. This isn’t about anger or revenge. It’s about responsibility. It’s about doing what’s right, even when it’s hard. Because if we don’t make changes — if we don’t close the gaps that let people fall through — then this isn’t justice. It’s just tragedy repeated.

Right now, I’m still building this movement — still growing awareness, still trying to get Cody’s Law ready for submission. And I can’t do it alone. I’m asking for help — whether that’s by sharing Cody’s story, spreading the word, or contributing to the cause.

Every donation, every bit of support, helps me keep going — helps me keep Cody’s light alive, and helps build something that could save someone else. I believe with all my heart that Cody’s story can bring change — but only if we keep fighting for it. Because justice shouldn’t end in court. Justice should save lives.

Why I Speak Out

Why I Speak Out

Why I Speak Out

I speak because Cody no longer can.
I am his voice — and I will continue to speak for him until something changes.

This isn’t about anger or revenge. It’s about love. It’s about responsibility.
It’s about making sure no other mother ever has to bury her child because someone denied them the basic right to safety and warmth.

Through the Justice for Cody Initiative and the creation of Cody’s Law, I’m fighting to ensure that every Montanan — no matter where they live or how much they earn — is protected by education, enforcement, and compassion.

Cody’s story is more than a tragedy — it’s a call to action.
His life mattered. His voice matters.
And as long as I live, I will make sure his story creates change that saves others.

Because if we don’t change, it isn’t justice — it’s tragedy repeated.

Who Cody Was

Why I Speak Out

Why I Speak Out

Cody Hunter Sorenson was more than just my son — he was a light that shined wherever he went. He was strong, kind, and endlessly hardworking — the kind of young man who found joy in the dirt under his boots, the sound of a horse’s breath in the cold morning air, and the peace that only the Montana wilderness can offer. Cody loved deeply — his family, his animals, his daughter, and the land he called home. He had a heart as wild and gentle as the country he lived in. He dreamed of owning his own outfitting and guiding business, showing others the beauty of the backcountry that had shaped his soul. Those who knew Cody remember his laugh — that deep, genuine kind that made people feel like they belonged. They remember his loyalty, his courage, and his belief that hard work and honesty were enough to build a good life. He was the kind of man who took care of others before himself — and who deserved a world that cared back.

Why I Speak Out

Petition for “Cody’s Law”

In January 2024, Cody’s life was cut short under circumstances that should never have been possible. We believe Cody died because he was denied essential services — heat, water, and electricity — by his landlord during a Montana winter storm. But when his basic needs were taken away, he was left to face subzero temperatures alone — his truck became both his shelter and his struggle — the only heat he had. A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed, but no legal action can bring Cody back. His passing revealed painful gaps in how our state monitors housing safety, enforces essential service laws, and protects those who rent their homes — especially in rural Montana.

And that’s where my mission began.
